Message from Simon Niemeyer:
On Thursday February 26 the Deliberative Democracy groups will be holding an informal workshop on the future of deliberative research in Seminar Room A in the Coombs Building starting at 11am. The meeting will be an opportunity to chart out potential research interests within the ANU and in conjunction with current and potential future research partners, a number of whom are currently visiting with us.
The format will be four short presentations (30minutes, including questions), Lunch at 1pm (venue to be confirmed) followed by a roundatable discussion on research ideas by those who are interested in participating in future research. The pre-lunch component of the workshop is open to anyone who may be interested in the topic area(s) covered by the presentations and/or involvement in future research.
The post-lunch component is open to anyone who is interested in contributing to the development of a future research agenda.
The pre-lunch presentations will include:
A systemic turn in deliberative research; John Dryzek
Deliberative Reforms in the Political System; Andre Bachtiger
The relationship between deliberative procedure and outcomes (and other unfinished micropolitical business); Simon Niemeyer
In-person, Online Deliberation; Kimmo Gronlund

Claire Donovan has been awarded a CRASSH Visiting Fellowship at the University of Cambridge. She won her place in an international
competition centred on the theme of 'The Future University', and
will work in the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences
and Humanities on the topic 'Beyond the Post-modern University'
during Michaelmas Term 2009. |

Linda
Botterill, who is the 2008 Vice Chancellor's
Media Award recipient for her extensive and sustained
engagement in public debate on drought in Australia.
The Vice-Chancellor's Media Award recognizes an academic who,
through their engagement with the media, embodies the activities
and values outlined in ANU 2010.
Those core activities include:
* exploring the important problems and issues that confront the
nation, the region and the world, and working to provide solutions
* informing the public through leading open discussion of those
issues. |

ANU E Press has just published a new
volume in its ANZSOG series, entitled Public
Leadership: Perspectives and Practices, co-edited by professors
Paul 't Hart and John Uhr. The volume contains 23 chapters together
providing a state of the art of theory, research and practical
insights on contemporary public leadership challenges and practices
in Australian and New Zealand. The chapters cover political, public
service and civil society leadership, and are written by a multidisciplinary
cast of researchers and practitioners from both countries.

Political Psychology Editorship
The International Society of Political Psychology has announced that the
editorship of Political Psychology, one of the world's leading political
science journals (11/93 SCCI) for 2010-2013 has been awarded to an
international team of scholars including Paul 't Hart. Paul is a long-time
member of ISPP, has been on the journal's board for many years, and has
been the recipient of its 1997 Erik Erikson Award for Early Career
Achievement. Paul will be responsible for all submissions on political
leadership/elites. |

Research Grant
Prof Ian McAllister has been awarded $US404,272 from the US National Science Foundation
with Prof
Nancy Burns of the University of Michigan for a continuance
of their study "The Dynamics of Political Choice:
the Third Module of the Comparative Study of Electoral Systems
(CSES)".

Conference Notice
Bicameralism: Australia in Comparative Context
Sponsored by the Parliamentary
Studies Centre, ANU
Parliament House, Canberra, 9-10 October 2008
This free two-day international conference is one of series of
research activities organised through the Parliamentary Studies
Centre at the Australian National University. The conference on
Bicameralism is part of a three year research project on 'Strengthening
Legislative Institutions' sponsored by the Australian Research
Council (ARC) through a Linkage Grant involving the ANU and the
Departments of the Senate and of the House of Representatives
in the Australian Parliament.

Federation Fellowship
The Political Science Program, (RSSS), is very pleased to announce
that Professor John Dryzek has been awarded a Federation
Fellowship by the Australian Research Council. Congratulations
and best wishes from all members of the Program.
The Fellowship will be used to study how international institutions
can be made both more democratic and more effective in dealing
with pressing global issues such as climate change. John will
be Director of the new Centre for Deliberative Global Governance.

Mobile Phone Research
Professor Judy Wajcman presents "The
Impact of the Mobile Phone on Work/Life Balance: Final Survey
Report". This research has been done as part of
an Australian Research Council Linkage Grant partnered with the
Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) (the peak
industry body for the mobile telecommunications industry).

Travel Grant
Claire
Donovan has been awarded funding under the Vice-Chancellor's
Travel Grant Scheme to take up visiting fellowships in leading
science, technology and society (STS) programmes in the USA,
UK and Asia-Pacific to write the regional chapters for her first
book 'The Governance of Social Science: New Foundations
of a Science for Society' (Edward Elgar Publishing).
From November 2007 to March 2008 she will be a visiting fellow
at the John F Kennedy School of Government, Harvard; SPRU, University
of Sussex, and the STS Cluster at the National University of
Singapore.

An ARC Linkage Grant has been awarded to John Dryzek and Simon
Niemeyer (with Lyn Carson and Ian Marsh from Sydney, Janette Hartz-Karp
from Murdoch) in partnership with the New Democracy Foundation
to run an Australian Citizens' Parliament.

Adaptation to Climate Change in the Australian Public Sphere:
A comparison of individual and group deliberative responses to
scenarios of future climate change'.

Professor Judy Wajcman launched the first report of an
Australian Research Council Linkage Grant partnered with the Australian
Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) (the peak industry
body for the mobile telecommunications industry) at the AMTA annual
conference in Sydney on 16 July.
The presentation of the report "The Impact of the Mobile Phone
on Work/Life balance" attracted a great deal of media attention.

Professor Paul 't Hart has won the 2007 Herbert A. Simon
Award from the American Political Science Association for Distinguished
Contribution to the field of Public Administration. It is for
the book The Politics of Crisis Management: Public Leadership
Under Pressure, co-authored with Arjen Boin (Leiden University),
Eric Stern and Bengt Sundelius (both Uppsala University), published
by Cambridge University Press.
The Award will be presented in August during the (American) APSA
2007 conference in Chicago.
