Research Project This project, with Professor Stephen White (University of Glasgow), uses opinion surveys to answer questions about democratic consolidation and political behavior in the postcommunist societies of central and eastern Europe and Russia. It examines the influence of party and electoral systems, partisan loyalties and political behavior generally, in the process of democratic consolidation. The long term output is planned to be two books, one examining the consolidation of voting behavior in Russia, the other a more general work examining comparative patterns of voting across the broad spectrum of postcommunist societies. The research is supported by the UK Economic and Social Research Council. Key publications: 'Turnout and Representation Bias in Postcommunist Europe.' Political Studies, forthcoming (with Stephen White). 'Political Parties and Democratic Consolidation in Postcommunist Societies.' Party Politics, forthcoming (with Stephen White). 'Media Effects and Russian Elections, 1999-2000.' British Journal of Political Science 35(2): 191-208 (2005) (with Stephen White and Sarah Oates). 'Dimensions of Disengagement in Postcommunist Russia.' Journal of Communist Studies and Transition Politics 20(1): 81-97 (2004) (with Stephen White) How Russia Votes.
