Francis G. (aka Frank) Castles is Professor of Social and Public
Policy at the University of Edinburgh and Adjunct Professor in
the Political Science Program, Research School of Social Sciences,
Australian National University. He is a Fellow of the Academy
of Social Sciences in Australia, former Head of the RSSS Political
Science Program, former Head of the ANU’s Public Policy
Program and one-time Professor of Political Science and Dean of
the Social Sciences Faculty at the Open University in the UK.
In 1989, he was awarded the degree of Litt.D. from his alma mater,
the University of Leeds, for a body of published research making
a substantial original contribution to the literature of comparative
public policy. Working in both quantitative and historical modes,
virtually all his research output has been comparative and much
of it focused on the political economy of welfare state development
in industrialized societies. He is the author of seven books,
editor of thirteen more and author of more than a hundred refereed
articles and book chapters. Recent books include Australia
Reshaped: 200 years of institutional development [Co-editor,
Cambridge University Press, 2002], The Future of the Welfare
State: Crisis Myths and Crisis Realities [Oxford University
Press, 2004], Federalism of the Welfare State: New World and
European Experiences [Co-editor, Cambridge University Press,
2005].
